Dear Diary,

My dad came home tonight and said he had a family announcement to make. We all had to gather in the dining room and sit around the table and listen. My brother looked scared. My mom was holding Gloria on her lap. I put Fifi on my lap.

My dad said, “I’ve made a family decision. Now that Uncle Dave died I realize that we do need to go to church. It’s important to have some sort of faith. I’m not that sure what I believe, but your mother wants you to believe in something. So I’ve decided that we’re going to become Universal Harmony Witnesses.”

Everyone looked amazed. I don’t know what a Universal Harmony Witness is. I know Catholics and Protestants and I even know a few Jewish kids. But I don’t know any Universal Harmony Witnesses.

We were all quiet. My brother just fidgeted and asked if we would have to move. I guess he didn’t understand all the grown-up talk.

Mom said, “Well, dear, why would we become that?”

Dad said it was because we have so many backgrounds in our family. We have Catholics and Protestants and our relatives also came from all different places in the world. So the smartest thing to do to be fair to all of our ancestors is to be something else, like Universal Harmony Witnesses.

It still didn’t make much sense.

My brother still wanted to know if we had to move again. I said, “Be quiet. It has nothing to do with moving.”

Dad said the Universal Harmony Witnesses are very fair and don’t put a lot of demands on you, and that lots of people who aren’t sure what they are go to services there.

Well, that’s about all I got out of the conversation. I just know that we’re going next Sunday.

Actually, I’m happy. I like to learn new things and maybe I’ll get some answers for the things that are confusing right now for me.
